Image
Your favorite spooky traditions had to start somewhere by Caroline Picard and Lizz Schumer If you think Halloween is a uniquely American tradition, grab a mini Snickers and settle in, because you've got some learning to do. Dressing up in a creative costume ,  traipsing around in the gathering dusk to collect the best candy or throwing a monster bash with friends are all time-honored holiday traditions. But Halloween didn't start stateside at all. In fact, the  origins of Halloween  go back thousands of years to the Celtic celebration of Samhain (pronounced "sow-win"), a festival that marked the end of the harvest season and ushered in a new year. During Samhain, the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead was thought to be especially thin, so people could communicate with loved ones who had passed on. Whether or not you buy into the supernatural, it's still fun to learn a little something about the meaning behind your favorit...

Image
From floaters and flashes to dryness and sharp pain — know what symptoms may signal a bigger problem by Jessica Migala, AARP Getty Images You may think that recent changes in your vision are just another sign you’re getting older. With new treatments for a variety of eye diseases, doctors can slow their progression or reverse the damage — though you have to know what’s going on first. Here are some troubling eye symptoms and what to do if you experience one. 1. You have double vision First, a self-test: Cover one eye. Is the symptom still there? If yes, that’s good news. The cause cou...

Wait too long in the day and you’ll miss her, too. Ivey, 27, works for a tech consulting firm in Atlanta and says she drives into the office once or twice a month. When she’s there, she commits to an 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. schedule — just in time for a catered lunch, to catch up with colleagues for a few hours, and head out before traffic stalls her in a “hellish” commute home, she tells CNBC Make It. She and her team are open about this arrangement. Spending a few shortened days in the office each month   “takes needed time away from the actual work” to socialize and build community, she says, but “I’m a lot more producti...

History Lesson Tuesdays: Clevelanders Will Never Forget This Shocking Tragedy That Happened Over A Quarter-Century Ago

Image
by Nikki Rhoades Way back in 1990, a grisly discovery shook the nation. There were murders, the media reported, in a barn in rural Ohio. This quaint community had been peaceful, residents reported. It was an enchanting place to live. What was it that changed? The short answer: a cult took advantage of the area’s history and left their mark on the community forever. He spread his teachings and gained a small band of followers, a group that included Dennis and Cheryl Avery, as well as their children; Karen, Rebecca, and Trina. He grew up as a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, through which he w...
